Monica in Fairbanks Ranch North traded a worn 1980s patio for one that reads as stone at about half the price of real slate. Her old patio wrapped an outdoor kitchen with cracked tile and loose grout, so we tore it out and poured an 800 sq ft patio and walk in an ashlar slate stamp in a sandstone color with a charcoal release, then sealed it after the cure. The integral color runs through the whole slab, so a chip near the grill shows sandstone, not gray. Her job was an estimated $10,400 to $14,600 and took an estimated 3 to 4 days on site.

The Stamping Process: How We Lay Out a Patio

We draw the stamp layout off your doors, steps and joint lines before pour day, since a slate grid that wanders away from the slider is the flaw everyone sees first. We draw the layout at the measure and the finishing foreman follows it on pour day.

  1. Squaring off: the first row of the pattern lines up with the back door or slider, and the slab drains gently outward.
  2. Color: integral color goes in at the plant, or color hardener is broadcast on the fresh surface and floated in.
  3. Release: a contrasting release powder is spread so the stamp mats lift clean and leave the accent color in the joints.
  4. Stamping: the crew presses the mats in sequence while the concrete is still workable, then details the edges by hand.
  5. Joints: control joints are saw-cut along the grout lines of the pattern so a crack hides in a joint.
  6. Sealing: the release is washed off and the surface sealed once the slab has cured.

Stamping has to happen inside a short window while the concrete is plastic, which is why a stamped pour needs a full crew and is not a weekend DIY job.

Integral Color or Color Hardener

A stamped patio gets its color one of two ways, through the whole mix or as a surface layer, and each ages in its own way. Integral color is iron oxide pigment added to the mix, so the full depth carries the color and a chip shows the same tone underneath. Color hardener, a dry shake of pigment, cement and fine sand floated into the wet top, leaves a brighter and harder skin. Many La Costa and Aviara patios use integral color for the base and a darker release for the accent.

Stamped concrete in Carlsbad is estimated at roughly $8 to $19 per sq ft installed, and the pattern, the number of colors, borders and the tear-out move the price most. A stamped or colored patio of about 400 sq ft typically lands at $3,200 to $7,600.

A one-color ashlar or flagstone pattern sits near the low end of each range, while two colors, a border and stamped steps push a patio toward the top. Back yards in Olivenhain and Calavera Hills often need a pump over the house, which we list in the quote.

These stamped concrete figures are estimates for Carlsbad and nearby cities and are subject to change. Your written quote after the measure sets the final price and the pour schedule, and it depends on square footage, the pattern and color system, and access to the yard.

Stamped vs Broom vs Exposed Aggregate

Pick stamped concrete for a patio you entertain on, broom finish when budget and traction matter most, and exposed aggregate for the middle ground around a pool. The table compares the three finishes we pour most around Aviara and Leucadia homes.

FinishEst. installed priceBest useUpkeep

Broom finishEst. $6 to $13 per sq ftSide yards, service walks, budget patiosSweep and rinse
Exposed aggregateEst. $7 to $18 per sq ftPool decks and sloped walksGentle wash, occasional seal

Against brick or pavers, stamped concrete gives the look with no sand joints for weeds, though a crack in one slab is harder to hide than lifting a single paver.

Stamped Concrete in Coastal Sun and Salt Air

Coastal stamped patios last when we match the pigment, the sealer and the curing method to sun and salt. Integral pigment resists fading in full sun, and a sound sealer keeps salt spray from soaking in and flaking the surface on Leucadia and Solana Beach patios. The marine layer slows a morning cure in May and June, while a dry Santa Ana week pulls water out of fresh concrete fast, so our foreman times the stamping to the weather. Wet glossy sealer on a smooth slate texture gets slippery, which is why we mix anti-slip grit into the final coat near pools and doors.

Stamp Patterns, Colors and Materials We Pour

Slate, flagstone and wood-plank patterns cover most patios, and the same color system carries onto a pool deck around the coping. For a modern house, owners often pair a stamped patio with a board-formed concrete wall, and a sound old slab can take a stamped look through concrete resurfacing overlays.

Why Homeowners Hire Our Stamping Crew

Our owner checks every stamped layout before it is quoted, and the same finishing foreman stamps, details and seals your patio. A crew of 3 to 5 handles each pour so the mats go down while the concrete is still workable, and the 1-year written workmanship warranty from the day the concrete is placed covers the work. Our 35-mile radius takes the same crew from Carlsbad Village to Old Del Mar.

Stamped Concrete Service Areas

We stamp patios across North County, with many in Del Mar beside Spanish Colonial Revival and Tudor Revival homes, in Fairbanks Ranch around outdoor kitchens and in Encinitas on coastal lots. Rancho Santa Fe, Solana Beach, Harmony Grove and Lake San Marcos are covered too, all listed on our service area page.

Related Decorative Concrete Services

A stamped patio usually connects to the rest of the house, so owners add matching stamped entry steps and landings, a stamped garden walkway or a stamped driveway replacement in the same pattern.

Stamped Concrete Questions From Carlsbad Homeowners

How much does a stamped concrete patio cost in Carlsbad?

A stamped patio of about 400 sq ft is estimated at roughly $3,200 to $7,600, and your written quote after the measure sets the final price.

How long does a stamped patio take?

Most stamped patios in Carlsbad or Lake San Marcos take an estimated 2 to 4 days on site, from tear-out to the first sealer coat.

Is stamped concrete slippery?

It can be when sealed glossy over a smooth pattern, so we add non-skid grit to the sealer and favor textured patterns near pools.

Will stamped concrete crack?

All concrete shrinks, so we cut control joints along the pattern's grout lines and set rebar on chairs to keep cracks tight and hidden.

Is integral color better than color hardener?

Integral color runs through the slab so chips do not show gray, while color hardener gives a brighter, denser top layer.

Can you stamp over my old patio?

A sound slab can take a stamped overlay, while a cracked or heaved patio is torn out and repoured.

Can I choose the pattern and color at my house?

Yes, our estimator brings mats and chips to the yard, whether the patio is in Olivenhain or Old Del Mar, so the color is judged in your own daylight.

What warranty comes with a stamped patio?

Every stamped patio carries our 1-year workmanship warranty from the day the concrete is placed.
